Alsident System Extraction Arms and ATEX
Alsident® extraction arms marked for use in explosive atmosphere
Antistatic extraction arms from Alsident® System 75 and System 100 are provided with an Ex-label for use in explosive atmosphere.
The test on the antistatic extraction arms are carried out by the Danish Technological Institute according to standards EN 80079-36:2016 and EN 80079-37:2016, supporting ATEX directive 2014/34/EU. This consequently concludes that the extraction arms are approved for installation in potentially explosive areas and they are labelled:
Ex II 1 GD
The tests are carried out with both a hood and the attached earth wire. Therefore, it is very important not to remove the wire when installing the arm.The wire is to be connected to the ventilation system in order to achieve a potential equalization between the extraction arm and the ventilation system. When mounting the extraction arm it is also improtant to isolate the bracket from conductive parts of the building such as steel columns. In ATEX areas we recommend brackets made of acid proof stainless steel, which is considered spark free and therefor in compliance with EN 1127-1 5.3 "Mechanically generated sparks".
Please note that the end user is liable for making the risk assessment of the entire installation. Alsident System A/S also recommends the earthing of the extraction arm to be carried out by personnel experienced in EX areas.
All ESD/Ex extraction arms from Alsident® System is deliveres with an extended manual for mounting and a certificate of conformity.

The ATEX directive is not applicable to the Alsident® extraction arms
The ATEX-directive 2014/34/EU concerns equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmosphere. The pre-condition for the directive to apply is that the equipment must have its own source of ignition (cf. ATEX guidelines 2. edition, part 3.7 equipment).
Static electricity built up during the substance flow through the tubes does not constitute a potential ignition source as understood by ATEX (cf. ATEX guidelines 2. edition, part 3.7.2 "own ignition source"). The Alsident® System extraction arms are therefore not affected by the ATEX directive, and are not to be marked with the hexagon label (fig. 1) and CE (fig.2).

Supporting the ATEX directive
The antistatic extraction arms in Alsident® System 75 and System 100 have been tested and EX marked according to EN 80079-36:2016 and EN 80079-37:2016, supporting ATEX directive 2014/34/EU. Links to further information here.
The extraction arms from Alsident® System 75 AS and System 100 AS are therefore suitable for installation in potentially explosive atmospheres.
